The Angus cattle

Among British beef cattle breeds, it is the most popular and widely used breed after the Hereford. The Angus cattle originate from the counties of Aberdeen and Angus (formerly Forfarshire) in Scotland. It was named after its original geographical location. Records suggest that the ancestors of the breed appeared as early as the 12th century, while others claim it was the 15th century, though at that time they were only of local significance.

From the very beginning, it was genetically polled (hornless), and various color variations existed. At that time, it had not yet diverged from the Galloway breed.

Aberdeen (including Banff, Kincardine, and Angus), located in northeastern Scotland, is a mountainous, hilly area surrounded by coastline, with a temperate climate, significant rainfall, and exceptionally lush grasslands. Angus is one of the most fertile agricultural regions in Scotland.

Three individuals are considered the founders of the breed: Hugh Watson (from Angus), William McCombie (from Aberdeenshire), and George MacPherson-Grant (from Banffshire).

Watson’s father selected the six best and blackest cows and bred them with a bull named Bannantyne Sandy. Later, he purchased a bull named Tarinty Jock. To avoid inbreeding, he also used the President 3 line as a breeding bull in later years.
In the herd book, the number one cow is Old Grannie 125, whose death at the age of 36 in 1859 was caused by a tree felled during a storm. Throughout her life, she produced 29 calves and won numerous awards and honors. In 1858, at the age of 34, she won the grand prize at the Highland Show in Aberdeen for her longevity and record-breaking reproductive traits.
